Cameroon: Simulation session of the CHRC appearance before the Accreditation Sub-Committee

On 23 January 2024, the Commissioners and Staff members of the CHRC will be present at the Simulation of the CHRC’s appearance before the Sub-Committee on the Accreditation of the Human Rights.
The members of the Sub-Committee on Accreditation of the Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CHRC) were studious and concentrated.
The reason: everyone is aware of the stakes involved in the accreditation of the CHRC.
Mr Gilbert SEBIHOGO, the Executive Secretary of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions (NANHRI), is the expert called upon by Prof James Mouangue Kobila, the Chairperson of the CHRC, to moderate the activity. ” It is a great pleasure, dear Gilbert SEBIHOGO, to welcome you to this simulation exercise of the CHRC’s first appearance before the Accreditation Sub-Committee of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) as the new National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) of Cameroon. One of the reasons why I am pleased to welcome you to this conference room is the success of your last mission to the CHRC ” said an enthusiastic Chairperson of the CHRC, beyond the bitterness and sadness ” that we all felt with the loss of that true personality who was our colleague, the late Salihou LABARANG, an expert in social work, who died on 26 December after an illness.
After observing a minute’s silence in his memory, the Chairperson of the CHRC paid tribute to Mr Gilbert SEBIHOGO’s ” stubborn, proud and unwavering commitment ” to NHRIs and his self-sacrifice in serving the noble cause of human rights. A truth shared by the audience.
In a relaxed and convivial atmosphere, the NANHRI expert took the floor to emphasise that ” the aim of this working session is to better equip the CHRC in its commitment to the Paris Principles accreditation process. We will therefore, among other things, examine together the content of the Declaration of Compliance, focusing on the elements that the Subcommittee on Accreditation looks for in order to assess an NHRI’s compliance in law and practice with the Paris Principles (establishment, independence, working methods, relationship with civil society organisations, etc.) “, before moving on to his first presentation. He gave three presentations on the first day, two of which elicited many questions and reactions from particularly engaged participants. At the end of this first day of work, the CHRC Commissioners and Staff Members were sufficiently edified. “The training is very useful and indispensable. We would like to thank the Chairperson the CHRC for this initiative “, said Antoine Bologo Aloumbe, a staff member who also attended the workshop. Annet Enonchong, the Chief of the File and Statistics Unit, added: ” The expert’s second presentation was very interesting. I liked the point he made about the need for the CHRC to develop a very solid relationship with the government and parliament “.
On 24 January 2024, Prof James Mouangue Kobila, together with the Vice-Chair, the Commissioners, the Permanent Secretary, the Head of Division for Promotion and Protection, the Chiefs of Staff, the Chiefs of Services and other relevant staff of the Cameroon Human Rights Commission, will be immersed in the mechanisms of the accreditation process with a view to obtaining A status. The CHRC submitted its Statement of Compliance and 133 appendices to the Sub-Committee on Accreditation on 2 October 2022.
