CHRC CHAIRPERSON PROMISES TO HELP UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN CAMEROON
Professor James Mouangue Kobila granted an audience to executive members of the Cameroon Students’ Rights Association (CSRA) at the Commission’s Head Office on Wednesday 5 July 2023.
Professor James MOUANGUE KOBILA, Chairperson of the Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CHRC), has promised to once again contact the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education on some challenges faced by students in State universities in Cameroon. He made the promise during a one-hour audience granted to the Cameroon Students’ Rights Association (CSRA) on Wednesday 5 July 2023 at the audience room of the institution. The delegation of three persons which was led by Ms. NAKOUA Nathalie, Vice President of that association was aimed at sharing information and concerns students in state universities in Cameroon with a view to promote better training, better consideration of their personality as well as an improvement of their living and study conditions.
During the audience, Ms NAKOUA Nathalie exposed the problems faced by students of State universities in areas of logistics, infrastructures, sexually related violations and lodging. She added that the presence of CSRA in some universities is not welcome, as a result their mission. The Chairperson responded in saying that the Commission had already made some recommendations in various statements issued by the CHRC to mark the International Day of Education, while assuring them that he will make more recommendations to the aforementioned competent authorities in the hope to resolve the issues presented.
The Chairperson who was very delighted to have the association reminded them of the three missions of the CHRC which comprise the promotion and protection of human rights as well as the prevention of torture in places of detention.
Ms. Nakoua told Professor Mouangue Kobila that CSRA had reached out to certain members of the government, in particular the Prime Minister, the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education and the Minister of Housing and Urban Development each in its own way, to find concrete solutions to the difficulties previously identified.
The one hour audience finally came to an end with the CHRC Chairperson encouraging his guests to better sensitise students on their Rights including the denunciation of alleged violations through the CHRC toll-free number 1523.
