Professor James Mouangue Kobila met with the new
executive of ADDEC at the Commission’s Head Office on Friday 5 July 2024
Professor James Mouangue Kobila, Chairperson of the
Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CHRC), met with a delegation from the
Cameroon Students’ Rights Association. The delegation was led by Ms Nathalie
Nahoua, Vice President, and included Mr Nchangouo Chissou, Secretary General,
Mr Mfeyet Boris Ange, National Secretary for Housing; and Ms Ada Asseurou
Danisca, member. The Chairperson was accompanied in the audience by Mr Mamouda
Ferikouop, the Chief of Staff of the Chairperson’s Office, Ms Shu Nyamboli Mabel,
the Head of the Cooperation, Documentation and Research Service, and Ms Linda
Bassengue Endjen, the CHRC Focal Point for Drugs Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The meeting, which took place one year after the
previous gathering on 5 July 2023, had three main objectives: introduce the new
executive of ADDEC, share information on the new 2024 strategic action plan of
ADDEC and discuss the progress of implementation of the recommendations made
during the last meeting with the relevant ministries. However, members of the
ADDEC also highlighted the ongoing challenges and expressed concern about the
recent human rights violations faced by students in academic institutions. It
was noted that several of these violations have already been resolved,
including modalities of payment of school fees, financing of the defence for
Masters and PhD students and the organisation of post-defence receptions in
accordance with the demands of the jury. Furthermore, issues pertaining to the
division of campuses of Maroua University, including the provision of meals for
students according to standards, compliance with student accommodation
regulations, and instances of sexual harassment on campus remain, unresolved.
The CHRC Chairperson was pleased to engage in this
constructive dialogue with ADDEC and assured its representatives that the CHRC
was committed to taking swift action to facilitate their plea to the relevant
authorities. The CHRC Chairperson committed to leveraging ADDEC expertise and
raising awareness about students' rights among students in public and private
higher education institutions. This will include encouraging them to use the
CHRC toll-free number 1523 to report any violations of their rights.
ADDEC representatives seized the opportunity to inform
the CHRC Chairperson of their forthcoming 20th anniversary, which will be
celebrated by the end of the year. They requested the CHRC's support for this
event.
The one-hour audience concluded with the CHRC Chairperson encouraging his guests to maintain consistent awareness of students on human rights and particularly on their rights, by systematically reporting all violations to the relevant CHRC branches or head office, including through the CHRC toll-free number 1523.
