Awareness campaign for Christians in Saint Peter's Parish-Kong, Yaounde Seventy Christians participated in an awareness campaign for the promotion of Human Rights of the CHRC As part of the execution of its mandate of promotion and protection of human rights as well as the prevention of torture in places of deprivation of freedom, the Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CHRC) took part, from 26 - 27 August 2023, in the ‘Salon Justice et Paix’. This meeting was organized at the Saint Peter Parish-Kong in Yaounde, by the eponymous committee. The Promotion Unit of the CHRC represented the Commission in this campaign intended to raise awareness among Christians of the Saint Peter Parish-Kong in Yaounde on the three mandates of the Commission. The team made up of seven staff members from the Promotion Unit deployed two awareness stands around the parish. In the first stand, documents relating to human rights were displayed and the second was reserved for the legal clinic intended to receive complaints relating to human rights violations. Staff members distributed communication tools with important information about the CHRC and its activities to Christians. Among other official documents, there were copies of the law setting up the CHRC and flyers dedicated to CHRC toll-free number 1523 were distributed. To this was added literature on the actions and situation of the CHRC in 2020, 2021 and 2022, on the independence of the CHRC, and on its code of conduct. Key works such as the CHRC Compendium of Statements and Press Releases, Human Rights Reports and human rights documents were also on display. The legal clinic allowed Christians to air their concerns and obtain solutions. In total, twelve Christians visited the stand provided for this purpose. After long hours of discussions, eight of these people requested more information about the CHRC. The other four had legal issues related to violation of property rights, rights to justice and rights to compensation. Some of these requests were transmitted to the Littoral Regional Office of the CHRC, for competence and local monitoring. The other requests registered during this legal clinic will be followed up by the protection unit at the Headquarters of the Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CHRC). In whole, more than seventy christians visited the awareness stands set up by the CHRC by the end of the meeting. The parish priest, Reverend Father Claude François BELINGA ABA΄A appreciated the presence of the Cameroon Human Rights Commission at this meeting and expressed the wish for greater collaboration with the Commission. The team also underlined the will of the Chairperson, Professor James Mouangue Kobila to make the Commission available for any exchange and thus, took the opportunity to solicit a stronger mobilization of Christians on future occasions.
