CELEBRATING THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND TRIBUTE TO THE VICTIMS OF TERRORISM CHRC encourages women's involvement in the fight against terrorism on 21 August 2023 Cameroon joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism. On this occasion, Cameroon's Human Rights Commission expressed its deep sorrow at the recent discovery of the remains of five Divisional delegates and an official of the Regional Tax Delegation, kidnapped on 15 June 2021 in Ekondo Titi in the Ndian Division, South-West Region. Among the victims of this heinous and barbaric act was a woman, Felicia Ndong, a Divisional delegate of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The consequences of terrorism affect women in particular. Along with children, they represent the majority of IDPs or vulnerable people in regions plagued by terrorism where they are generally recognized as victims, the CHRC encourages women to become actors in the fight against terrorism within their communities. The CHRC recognizes the role of women in mediation and peacebuilding. Women's activism was also the subject of Resolution in 1325 on Women, Peace and Security adopted by the UN Peace and Security Council. This resolution calls for peacebuilding and greater protection against violations of their fundamental rights. In its statement on 21 August 2023, on the 6th International Day of Remembrance in respect of the victims of terrorism, the CHRC praised "the enormous efforts made by the President of the Republic, Head of State, in the relentless fight against violent extremism and terrorism in the affected regions". The Commission recommends that religious authorities lay particular emphasis on the role played by women in promoting harmonious living together, a value cherished by the state of Cameroon.
