CHRC CHAIRPERSON SPEAKS HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION IN CAMEROON WITH THE U.S. AMBASSADOR TO CAMEROON
Professor James MOUANGUE KOBILA, the Chairperson of the Cameroon Human Rights Commission (CHRC) received in audience last Friday 24 March 2023, H.E Christopher John LAMORA the United States Ambassador to Cameroon. The audience was granted at the Head Office of the CHRC from 10:00 a.m. to 11: 09 a.m.
The discussion had as main focus, the human rights situation in Cameroon, following specifically the release of the U.S. Department of State 2022 Report on Human Rights around the world, published on Monday 20 March 2023. It was an opportunity for both parties to talk on a number of strategic points in the report, where the United States, Cameroon and most especially the Cameroon Human Rights Commission, may collaborate to help ameliorate the human rights situation.
The U.S. Ambassador was accompanied by Mr Lance KINNE,the Chief of the Political and Economic Section at the U.S. Embassy.
Also present during this audience were Mr FERIKOUOP MAMOUDA, Head of Division for Human Rights Promotion and Protection, Professor Blaise Alfred NGANDO NDEDI,
the Chief of Staff and Madame Yolande ELESSA, Head of the Cooperation Unit, all from the Head office of the CHRC.
The Chairperson of the CHRC assured the Ambassador of the continuous active engagement of the Commission in improving the human rights situation in the country.
While talking to the press at the end of the audience, the American diplomat precised that "there have been a couple of cases over the past two or three years in the United States where people have been arrested for breaking U.S. laws that have an effect on Cameroon." He added that an individual involved in a case of arms delivery to secessionists in 2021, "was just sentenced earlier this week to five years imprisonment."
