His
Excellency Filippo Scammacca Del Murgo, the Italian Ambassador, invited Prof
James Mouangue Kobila to attend the presentation of the project
"Strengthening the rule of law and the administration of justice
respectful of human rights and dignity in Cameroon. IT IS WORTHWHILE", in
Yaoundé, on 7 February 2024. The project is funded by the European Union (EU).
According
to Philippe Lafosse, Deputy Head of Mission for the EU, the project implemented
by the NGO Centre d’orientation Educative (COE) since one year aimed to
strengthen good governance in the field of justice, including prison conditions
and civil society participation. The key beneficiaries include prisoners,
particularly women, minors, youth, actors within the criminal justice system,
government authorities, prisoners' families and communities.
The
project was warmly welcomed by the Chairperson of the Cameroon Human Rights
Commission (CHRC). After congratulating His Excellency Filippo Scammacca Del
Murgo, the initiator of the project, and the European Union for its financial
support, Prof James Mouangue Kobila focused on two main aspects: meeting a need
identified during weekly visits by CHRC teams to prisons, and ensuring the
sustainability of the project, which will end in January 2026.
On
the first aspect, he emphasised the need to improve health services, while on
the second, still with a view to respecting human rights, Prof James Mouangue
Kobila expressed concern about the unsustainability of such an initiative that
will come to an end on January 2026. He was told that health problems would be
addressed in collaboration with the national prison authorities and that the
consortium of national CSOs involved in the project would be equipped to
continue the work after January 2026.
